Denver Broncos Star Skipping Offseason Program

Broncos star wide receiver Courtland Sutton remains a key absence from the team’s offseason workouts, in search of a new long-term contract extension.

According to Mike Kils of News 9 in Denver, Sutton hasn’t attended the team’s first 16 offseason workouts, and was absent as the Broncos entered phase II of the offseason program.

“I mean, it’s 100 percent voluntary,” Broncos general manager George Paton told reporters three weeks ago at a pre-draft press conference. “Sean has talked to Courtland; I’ve talked to Courtland. He’s in a good place, and I’ll just leave it at that.”

As Kils points out, Sutton has two years left on his contract with roughly $13.1 million — $2 million of which is fully guaranteed – due in 2024 and $13.5 million in 2025, none of which is guaranteed.

Sutton caught a team-high 10 touchdown passes last season, the fourth most in the NFL, and has pulled down 298 receptions for 4,259 yards and 24 scores through the first six seasons of his career.

There is certainly value in a young quarterback such as Nix having his full complement of weapons in the building during the spring leading up to minicamp, training camp and the regular season kicking off. But, until the two sides reach some sort of an accord, it seems like Sutton will continue to be a no-show, even as his name continues to circulate in ongoing trade speculation.
