Breaking down the commitment of Avery Gach to Michigan football

After a rough week for Michigan football on the recruiting trail, the Wolverines needed some positive news and they got it on Friday as four-star offensive lineman Avery Gach announced his commitment to U-M.

Michigan football earned his commitment over Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Michigan State, who were the other finalists for the 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive tackle from Franklin, Michigan.

Gach is the second-ranked player in the state of Michigan according to the 247 Sports composite rankings for the 2025 class. He’s also the No. 236 overall recruit as well as the fifth pledge overall for the Wolverines.

This is the second commitment under head coach Sherrone Moore, a former O-line coach. So it makes perfect sense. Offensive linemen are “weapons” as Jim Harbaugh said after the draft and here are some thoughts on a new offensive weapon for Michigan football.

Breaking down commitment of 4-star OT Avery Gach

Gach isn’t a five-star wide receiver but Michigan football knows the value of a quality offensive lineman and Gach can certainly be that for the Wolverines. He’s got the size and athleticism to play tackle on either side, even if some might believe he could be better suited as an interior guy.

For Sherrone Moore, this is a big victory. Yes, Bryce Underwood, the top-ranked recruit in the state is going to LSU but that has more to do with NIL than anything else.

Landing Gach, the second-best player in the state, an offensive lineman, should be a no-brainer for the Wolverines. U-M should win this recruitment 10 times out of 10. It’s still the second four-star pledge in the past couple of weeks.

It also keeps Michigan football at perfect 5/5 in the 2025 class in terms of blue-chippers. Michigan might not be signing a bunch of five stars, but the blue-chip ratio in the past two classes is at 70 percent. That’s good enough to win with as long as you hit on a quarterback, as I believe Michigan did with Jadyn Davis.

Gach might not win you an “offseason championship” but that’s an Ohio State thing. The Wolverines are interested in actual victories and landing Gach will help with that.
